Open Thread!

Hey guys,

Hope everyone is doing well!  Today I've been thinking about how easy it can be for us to get stuck in our ways.  Certainly, sometimes we need to have our unwavering convictions, but I think we also need to take a step back once and a while and look at life through other peoples eyes.  Given that this is a blog concerning functional fitness relating to functional life I was hoping everyone could post some feedback as to what they value in fitness and/or in life in general. Thanks in advance!

  1. I like to think I value similar things in both life and fitness. I have a love/hate relationship with working out and the only way I get through it is by making it enjoyable. I run with friends or make a good playlist to sing along with. I always try to make my life, as well as others around me, enjoyable too. I think that laughter is an important aspect. Being able to laugh at yourself about how you run like a chicken or how you fell walking to class, to me, keeps a little sanity in your life.

  2. It's easy to get stuck in habits and beliefs, especially when it comes to fitness. In high school I took my fitness very seriously, and took a pretty mainstream approach to my running, lifting, and nutrition. I found that my fitness routine got old very quickly; my body would adapt, and it became habit. This was both good and bad, in the sense that it was routine to get up and go to the gym after school, but my routine would often lose its effectiveness and I would quickly plateau.

In recent years, however, I've taken a holistic approach to my health and fitness. In doing this, I'm constantly listening to what my body's needs are, and I'm constantly learning and changing my ways. Perhaps the downside to this is that keeping a routine is more difficult. But when I listen to what my body needs rather than what someone else tells me to do, I find myself feeling much happier and healthier.

  3. I think this is a great topic! I also this it's important to reevaluate our priorities and what we value in life every once in a while, because as life gets crazy and different challenges arise, we sometimes lose sight of what we value. Two things I value most in my life are my health and my family. I often think about how fortunate I am to be healthy. Good health is something I think we most times forget to be thankful for, so it's good to cherish each and everyday while taking care of our bodies. Likewise, this goes hand-in-hand with appreciation for family members and close friends. I think family and friends are an incredible support system and we should rely on them as much as possible. That's what friends are for :)
